Lionel Rose was born in Warragul 1948, raised on Jacksons Track and rose to world fame as a boxer culminating in him, as a 20 year old, challenging “Fighting Harada” in Japan to become the World Champion.
In the same year he was awarded a MBE and became Australian of the Year, the first indigenous person to do so. Lionel was present at the launch of this artwork in his honour, passing away in 2011.
This project, via the construction of a bronze statue in Warragul, recognises and celebrates Lionel Rose’s achievements.
