Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell - Mallacoota

Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell - Mallacoota

July 29, 2017 @ 7:30 PM
Mud Brick Pavillion

Shirley Valentine by the award winning Willy Russell and starring Mandi Lodge (Menopause The Musical and Always...Patsy Cline) is a wonderfully entertaining monologue by a 42-year-old Liverpool mother whose self-esteem has been battered by school, marriage and life in general.  When her best friend wins a Greek vacation for two, Shirley grasps the chance to head for the sun, to re-find herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life.

With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society.

John Abery: Do you Remember? An exhibition of childhood memory

John Abery: Do you Remember? An exhibition of childhood memory

from August 04, 2017 @ 11:00 AM until September 25, 2017 @ 5:00 PM
Cowwarr Art Space

In this sculpture exhibition, John explores the nostalgia of childhood memories.  He deliberately created the works to be oversized, creating a feeling of wonder and excitement recreating the emotion a child would feel in the presence of a new toy.  He hopes these works will evoke a playful memory for everyone who sees them.

John Abery, the sculptor, is exploring and effectively recreating a childhood memory in his adult years.  He has deliberately created the sculptures to be large and oversized to emulate the excitement and overwhelming sensation that a child would feel in the presence of a new exciting object.

This collection of sculptures is designed to slow down the viewer, to look at things that we may take for granted but that a child would simply be in awe of.  This is emphasized by the sculpture called The Trinket Box.

“I have deliberately filled it with trinkets that may seem monotonous or subjectively boring.  However these objects are approached through the eyes of a child, my inner child and may also relate to the viewer’s inner child as well.” said the sculptor John

“Even the nostalgia of the bowl of marbles that would sit on Grandma’s coffee table and the excitement that would bring to a child” said John Abery.

The sculptor has constructed these objects out of wood, for obvious links to the past of handmade wooden toys that people will remember from days gone by but also because it is a medium that the artist loves to work with and has great respect for.
