Mystery in the Air - starring Michael Veitch and Simon Oats

Mystery in the Air - starring Michael Veitch and Simon Oats

September 14, 2017 @ 7:30 PM
West Gippsland Arts Centre

Comedy legend Michael Veitch with Simon Oats revive the golden era of 1940’s radio drama – 50 voices + 100 sound effects = 2 very busy actors!

Take a couple of hilariously antiquated radio plays, add two somewhat over-stressed actors and you're ON THE AIR with 'Mystery in the Air!'  This is the show that transports audiences back to the style, the fashion and - let's face it - the sheer political incorrectness of the 1940s.  Of course, back in those days, such luxuries as a proper cast and a sound effects department were the norm, but in these economically stringent times, it's all down to just our boys - costumes, sound effects, scene changes, music, voices - they'll do the lot.  It's a big ask, and occasionally they might even succeed.  The results, say audiences, are hilarious!

An award winning cabaret tale of the legendary French star, Edith Piaf

Direct from critically acclaimed seasons at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Adelaide Cabaret Festival, winner Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe 2016 and nominated for a Helpmann Academy, Exposing Edith charts the tragic life of arguably the greatest French singer of all time, Edith Piaf.

Experience her life, loves and losses through the songs that shot her to stardom including La Vie en Rose, Milord and Non, je ne regrette rien.  Created and performed by Michaela Burger [vocals] and Greg Wain [guitar], Exposing Edith is a stunning mix of authentic French chanson and contemporary sounds.  Having explored the undertones of Piaf's vocals and lyrics, Burger and Wain have created their own unique interpretations of Piaf’s work, using voice and acoustic guitar and the subtle use of loop, delay and effect pedals.

The songs are punctuated with a collection of extraordinary stories of Piaf’s life which are recounted by Burger, who also takes on a multitude of key characters, from Edith’s half-sister Momone, to several of her lovers and, of course, Edith Piaf herself.

“Let me start by telling you I’m ok. I’m just in a small situation involving a pesky cancer tumour in my left nork, but I’m not dying and I’m the luckiest person in the entire world.”

Jokes, truths, and one or two poignant bits from acclaimed Melbourne comic, Lana Schwarcz, who survived breast cancer.  Everyone hates cancer.  Good.  Let’s hate it together with gags, animated projections, and some characters you might meet along the way.  Hilarious, poignant and frank, this is a must see from anyone who has ever found themselves lying awake at night worrying about cancer.  Lovely Lady Lump reminds us of our ability to take the power back from our fears if we just laugh at them… Or at least with them.

Warnings: Nudity within context, occasional strong coarse language
