A Fine Line - Drawings from the Collection

A Fine Line - Drawings from the Collection

from June 18, 2016 @ 10:00 AM until October 02, 2016 @ 4:00 PM
Gippsland Art Gallery - Sale

The ability to draw is a fundamental tenet of art making, and has been both a means and an end to creating art for centuries.

At its core drawing has the power to excite, move and delight with the simplest of gestures and the most basic of means. As the most humble method of making a picture, it remains also the most enduring test of an artist’s skill and daring.

A Fine Line assembles a range of works from the collection whose only commonality is their abiding respect for the drawn line, and the artistic prowess of their makers.

The Floating World

from July 02, 2016 @ 9:00 AM until September 18, 2016 @ 4:00 PM
Latrobe Regional Gallery

The Floating World brings together a selection of ceramics, scrolls and Ukiyo-e prints from the Allan Aldous Bequest, made to Latrobe Regional Gallery in 2001. The bequest forms the basis of the Gallery’s permanent collection of Asian Art, which includes objects from 17th Century Persian miniatures, 19th Century Chinese scrolls and ceramics to a significant number of Japanese woodblock prints.

This exhibition will focus on the artistic expressions that emerged during Edo period Japan (1600-1868) forming part of a culture that prized the pursuits offered in entertainment such as Kabuki theatre, Geisha arts, Sumo wrestling and literature together with visual arts. Ukiyo-e, translated to literally mean “pictures of the floating world” were often seen as a way of escaping ones constraints and expressing ones self.

In 1967 the Museum of Modern Art, New York toured Two Decades of American Painting to Australia. That ground breaking exhibition introduced Australian audiences to the work of a new generation of American artists including Andy Warhol (aged 39), Jasper Johns (aged 37) and Robert Rauschenberg (aged 42).

47 years later, Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection will introduce a new generation of equally important American artists to Australian audiences.

Drawn from the private collection of Sydney-based Lisa and Danny Goldberg, Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection is a vibrant selection of new American art by some of America’s hottest young names, many of the works have been made within the last three years.
